When is Hospice care appropriate?
Hospice is the best choice when aggressive, cure-focused treatment is no longer effective, and the goals for health care are pain management, symptom control, emotional and spiritual comfort, and support for families. Our Hospice Program cares for patients with a variety of medical conditions and for patients of all ages.back to top

What is the goal of Hospice?
The goal is to help patients stay as comfortable and alert as possible, enhancing the quality of life and reducing loneliness and stress.  Support for the patient's family or caregiver is an important focus.  Hospice care does not delay or hasten natural death.back to top

How is Hospice care delivered?
Our Hospice Program staff members come to the patient's place of residence for home visits.  They coordinate their efforts to meet the medical, emotional, spiritual and practical needs of the patient and family.  By working with the primary caregiver(s), our Hospice Program has enabled many patients to stay in the comfort of their homes during this very precious time of life.  Our Hospice Program also cares for patients in assisted living centers, retirement homes, and nursing homes.back to top

Who are our Hospice staff?
Hospice care is brought to the patient by a team of nurses, medical social workers, home health aides, spiritual counselors, bereavement counselors and volunteers.  The team works closely with the patient's physician and the Circle Home Medical Director.back to top

Who pays for Hospice services?
Hospice care is a benefit of Medicare, Medicaid, and most HMO/insurance plans.  For those who are in financial hardship, sliding scale fees are offered.  Community donations are also used to provide care for patients in special need.  Our goal is that everyone who needs Hospice care receives it.back to top

How does Hospice help families who are grieving?
Our Hospice Program provides bereavement support services to family and friends for up to one year following the death.  These services include an annual community memorial service, informational mailings, and individual/family meetings.back to top

How are Hospice services arranged?
The process can begin with a phone call from anyone - the patient, family member, or health care provider: 978-458-3123.  Often the patient's physician or the hospital social worker will suggest Hospice services. Patients and families who are interested in Hospice should discuss this with the physician. Our Hospice nurses are available to discuss Hospice in detail with the patient and the family.back to top

What about patients who have advanced illness, but who are not eligible or ready for Hospice?
Our Bridge Program recognizes the importance of care for patients with serious illness. Our Hospice Program nurses care for Bridge patients, so that if the transition to Hospice occurs, the patient continues to be cared for by the same team without disruption. Hospice nurses have special expertise in palliative care, oncology and other acute services.back to top
